Assistant Director, Water Safety Patrol

Making Water Safety Her Mission—and Inspiring Others to Make a Splash

For Kaelean Cristiano, water safety is more than a profession. It’s a calling that has shaped the past 20 years of her life and continues to inspire her to help others protect, teach, and serve their communities. As Assistant Director of Water Safety Patrol, Kaelean works to keep people safe around Geneva Lake while encouraging others to discover their own passion for helping people.

Kaelean recently celebrated 20 years with Water Safety Patrol, bringing two decades of experience in aquatic safety, education, and emergency response to her role. Throughout her career, she has worked in swim lesson program management, lifeguard recruitment and training, and safety operations. She has certified hundreds of people in CPR, first aid, and lifeguarding, and taught dozens of aspiring swim instructors—equipping others with the skills and confidence to keep people safe.

Her commitment to safety extends beyond the job description. Kaelean became an EMT to deepen her medical knowledge and strengthen the first aid and CPR training she provides. For her, learning is never finished when there are more ways to prepare people to respond when it matters most.

But Kaelean’s impact isn’t measured only in certifications or years of service. She is passionate about helping others grow, advocating for people pursuing their own goals, and leading by example. She believes positivity and a growth mindset can be contagious, and she works to create an environment where people feel encouraged to take the next step, try something new, and discover what they’re capable of accomplishing.

That same generous spirit follows her home. Kaelean loves spending time with her husband and two young children, and she makes a point of volunteering for causes that matter to her community and the people she loves. If someone needs help, her instinct is to find a way to lend a hand.

She also has an adventurous side. Kaelean has solo-hiked and camped in the Colorado mountains, finding peace in the quiet of the outdoors. And while she may initially come across as reserved, those who know her quickly discover a mind full of ideas and an enthusiasm for making things happen.

Her approach to leadership combines the determination of a seasoned professional with the encouragement of someone who genuinely wants others to succeed. She doesn’t just teach people how to respond in an emergency; she helps them build the confidence to step forward and make a difference.

After 20 years on the water, Kaelean is still looking ahead, finding new ways to strengthen water safety and inspire the next generation of helpers. Just don’t expect her to volunteer for an outdoor training session when it’s below 65 degrees without a jacket. Even dedicated water-safety professionals have their limits.

Through her service, mentorship, and infectious optimism, Kaelean continues to make Walworth County a safer, stronger community—one trained responder, one encouraged volunteer, and one life at a time.
